What Sin Did: A Sermon Outline

Due to so much technical difficulties, many of our recordings were lost. However, I have outlines for many of these sermons, and I’d like to start with this one.

Sermon: what sin did

Text: Gen 3.1-24

INTRO:  In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there’s a villain who has Darth Vader as a grandfather. He idolized Vader and wants to be just like him.

But Vader went through a terrible life in his days as an evil man, and he even repented in the end. If Kylo Ren knew what the life of a Sith cost, would he still be Gun Ho to go that route?

That made me think of the world we live in:  the world tells us live as you want no matter what, but if they knew the price it cost, if they knew the Terrible events of the Garden of Eden, would they still be so enthused about living the life of Sin

Let’s take a look at just WHAT SIN DID!

I. The Devil and Doubt ( Gen 3.1-7 )

Genesis 3:1-2 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

     A. The Devil tried to TWIST WHAT God said.  He wants to make her DOUBT!  ( Gen 3.1 )

Genesis 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

      B.  Don’t Change God’s Word! Was Eve giving the Devil a foothold in Gen 3.3 by adding “don’t touch”?

               1.  This is what God said:

Genesis 2:16-17 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

                2. Whoever made the change, be it Adam or Eve, they shouldn’t have added to what God said, and neither should we!

                3. Safeguards and Hedges are fine, but never make the mistake of saying “God said it” if He didn’t!

Genesis 3:4-5 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

     C.  The Devil tried to call God a liar. He wanted to make her DO!  (Gen 3.4 )

               1. The Devil will try to show you the “benefits” of disobedience to God.

Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

     D.   Gen 3.6 shows all three temptation types at once for Eve!

              1. Lust of the flesh –   “Good for food”.  This leans towards a MISUSE of our natural makeup

                    a. E.g. In this case, we need food, but not a good that’s bad for us.

              2. Lust of the eyes-  “pleasant to the eyes” or “looks good”.  This is an appeal to do something that LOOKS good. It may look appealing, but sin is still sin, and there are still consequences.

             3. Pride of life- “desired to make one wise”.  She wanted to know what God knows, which was more than she was supposed to know.  This type of sin leans toward “I’m worth it,” or, “I deserve more.”

Genesis 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

     E. Gen 3.7 they tried to cover their mess on their own.  It didn’t work then, and it won’t work now!  We CANNOT FOX OURSELVES! Isaiah 64.6

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

II.  Sin Made them want to hide

Genesis 3:8-9 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

  1. Gen 3.8.  They went from openly walking with God, nothing  hide, to hiding from Him altogether!

1. One of the worst parts of sin is what it does to our relationship with God!

     B. Gen 3.9. God knew where Adam was, but God wanted to give him a chance to confess!
Many times, God calls people out to confess and repent of their sin, but nothing is truly ever hidden from God

Genesis 3:10-13 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

     C. They hid the blame. Ge 3.12-13

            1. In v 12 was he blaming Eve…or God?!

III. Sin exacted a heavy price

     Genesis 3:14-17 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

     A. Gen 3.14-17

Sin made the snakes eat dust……Sin gave the woman’s life painful and rough!…And sin made the man’s work tough!

Genesis 3:18-19 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

     B. Ge 3:19

Not only did sin cause spiritual death….it caused physical death as well!

Genesis 3:20-21 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

     C. Ge 3:21

God had to provide the coats!  What they did for themselves was not good enough!

  1. Because of sin, BLOOD had to be spilled. ( Hebrews 9.22 )

Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

Genesis 3:22-24 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

     D. Ge 3:24

They were thrown out of paradise, because they wanted a taste of the forbidden.  It wasn’t worth it!

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

     E. Ro 5:12

In sinning that ONCE, Adam stripped away the perfection of the human race. Now ALL mankind inherits sin from their fathers.

          1. Note:  this is why it’s important to know that  Jesus had no earthly father and was born of a virgin!   If he had a father, he would have been sinful as we are!

      F. Sin caused God to need to put HIS OWN life, In the form of Christ, on the chopping block for His own creation. God the Son died for all men!

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

          1. This was spoken of even here in Genesis 3.15!

Conclusion:   Sin exacted a heavy burden on mankind. But there is one solution. Christ is the only answer for our sin.   He died for our sin and rose from the dead so that those who repent of their sin and give him their lives, calling on Him for salvation, will receive the eternal life he offers. We should never forget or take lightly what sin cost him, or the price it takes when it takes its toll on even us!

My Journey Through the Bible, part 5

The following is my sermon outline for Genesis 6:1-22…

Sermon: The Ark

Text:  Gen 6:1-22

Intro:  We often hear the phrase Noah’s Ark.  yes, Noah built it, but God gave the plans.  Noah simply obeyed.  Let’s look at how it all started.

I. The Sin Of Man (1-7)

Genesis 6:1–6 (KJV 1900): And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. 3 And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. 4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. 5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

Genesis 6:7 (KJV 1900): And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

A.(4) Believers marrying pagans.  This will almost always cause problems.

B.(5) Evil continually.  What a mess the world must have been in.

           1. I just wonder if we aren’t where they were yet.

     C. God was sorry he made man!

            1. We need to remember that sin disgusts God!

II. The Righteousness Of Noah (8-10)

Genesis 6:8–10 (KJV 1900): But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.  10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

        A. Noah was upright (9)

B.(10) I believe he did his best to raise hisb3 children right too!

III. God’s Instructions (11-21)

  1. God gave Noah instructions on what to do to protect himself and his family.
  •   Building the ark wasn’t easy, but it was what God demanded.
  • . He couldn’t just build it how he wanted to.  He had to do it according to the instructions.
  • Does God not give us instructions on how to spiritually protect our families as well?
  • Do we not have instructions on how to live our lives the best way possible to avoid drowning in sin?

IV. Noah’s Obedience (22)

Genesis 6:22 (KJV 1900): Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

  1. If Noah hadn’t obeyed, his whole family would’ve died!
  2. What if your families welfare was dependent on your obedience to God?
  • It’s something to consider, because it very well could be the case.
  • What are they learning from you?   To do good? Or bad?  They’ll take that with them when they leave home.  Then what happens?
  • What about your close friends?  What do they see in your life?  How will that affect them?

    B.  Another judgment is coming.  One that involves those who reject Christ ending up in the Lake of Fire.   Obey the call to repentance before it’s too late!

Conclusion:

This is really only the tip of the story of Noah and the Ark, but there are some important things we need to learn from it:

1.  Sin disgusts God.  I think we’d better remember that the next time we try to make light of any sin.

2. Adding on to number 1, how we live our lives is important to God.

3. God has provided his Word, instructions for how to live here, and how to train up our families.

  •  We should always obey God.  There are blessings for obedience, and terrible consequences if we don’t!

That is the outline of my sermon. I pray you get a blessing out of it. Keep your eyes open for part 6 of this series.

Love in Christ,

You Want To Send WHO?!

Something I wanted to send you guys this morning. I was reading about Moses and God telling him he was going to save his people…

Exodus 3:7–9 (KJV 1900): And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; 8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them.

I wonder if Moses had a smile on his face. If he was perhaps encouraged. Until God said:

Exodus 3:10 (KJV 1900): Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.

Sometimes we know things need done. Sometimes we know God is doing a work. Sometimes that is exciting. But if God is going to do something, He is going to USE someone. Be ready, it could be you or me!

God is Bigger

Life hits hard. You don’t have to live for very long before problems begin to arise. Some pronounce doom and gloom, claiming that situations will never improve. However, for the believer in Christ, we know that God will come through for us. At the very least, according to Romans 8:28, he will make rough times work out to our good and His glory. Many times, however, he sees us through the problem, often even bringing us a solution.

There’s no promise that God’s children won’t have problems. However, there is a God who is bigger than the problems.

Your Mission Field

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is to be taken to all the world. This was the commandment of Christ, and much of the World has been reached. We have brothers and sisters all over the world who, like us, call Jesus Lord.

However, we also have people in our own neighborhoods who do not know Christ, and may never have even heard the Good News.

Let’s pray for our brothers and sisters around the world. Let’s also share Christ wherever we go.

Feeding Time

Christmas and Easter are often big meals, but if that’s the only time I ate a meal, I’d be dead. It’s not healthy to eat so rarely.

On that note, too many people try to come to feed spiritually about as often. That isn’t healthy for one’s spiritual life. We need to be taught God’s Word on a regular basis.

Found on facebook was the following statement:

“In order for a pastor to fulfill the Lord’s command to feed God’s flock, the sheep must show up during feeding times.”
